Home Douglas Adams Mostly Harmless. Mostly harmless, . 3. It hung around waiting, not quite sure what all this resentment was about. Not only small, but small, furry and cuddly. And there was another, dropping from the trees. On the right-hand side was a collection of large shapes jumbled familiarly together. The outlines were not exactly the same, and Arthur didn't know if this was because the map was so rough, or because the sea-level was higher or because, well, things were just different here. But the evidence was inarguable.

I read The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, the first book in the series, with great interest and joy. The Restaurant at the End of The Universe was very enjoyable too, but less so than the fist book. I didn't like Life, The Universe and Everything that much, and I had completely lost interest by So Long.

With Mostly Harmless, Douglas Adams returns to his much loved Hitchhikers style of writing.

One could say that the story comes full circle, because the series which starts with the Earth being blown to bits, ends with the earth being blow to bits, again.

Arthur is finally relieved of his burden, and we feel happy for him. Although not all the Hitchhikers characters we love are not in this story, as was the case with So Long, but I could not not like this story. I did miss Marvin, though.

Yes I read this entire series, I mean if you call yourself sci-fi fan of fans you have to read hitchhiker's. I've read the first book a few times and while it is an ok read is mostly just silly. And I can get on board with silly. But stretching silly for six books is rather much. So I don't really "get" these books and the fanatical following it has produced. I don't care for Arthur much, seems like a wild over the top English gent, but personally I don't get the joke of a person this dim. The rest of it is just tripe to me. Well written tripe, but nevertheless. Anyway enjoy it or not.

Every time I play this my husband says "HAMISH!" with excitement. There is something really splendid about hearing martin freeman read this sci fi classic (and not just because of his movie role as Arthur). He does great accents and voices. He's just a pleasure to listen to. The book itself embodies exactly what I love about Douglas Adams: intelligent, irreverent sci-fi humor which is often ridiculous and almost always poignant.

In my eyes, Douglas Adams' fifth Hitchhiker's Guide book was easily the weakest of the series. It was more confusing than coherent with more wordplay than plot and more ideas than depth. It felt like several chapters were written with no connection to the rest of the book and there were simply too many scenes and situations that simply lacked context and explanation. It did have some shining moments that the Hitchhiker's Guide series was known for but, ultimately, I simply wish I could alter the space/time continuum to go back in time and prevent Douglass Adams from tarnishing what would be his legacy with this half-assed effort…

Every page is funny, every chapter a wonderful playful exploration of scifi concepts and cutting commentary on life, the universe and everything. Simply the best!

Mostly Harmless is the final book in Adams' HHGTG

series, unless you count Eoin Colfer's enjoyable "And

Another Thing" and it is just as funny as the rest.

It is also a bit longer so it fulfills that

stereotype of making the last book in a series the

longest. But that is irrelevant to the story which is

amazing...and confusing as hell. But hilarious...and

headache inducing at times. My feelings to this book

are a bit mixed. On one hand, I loved it and laughed

along with it, but on the other it just seemed a

little too ridiculous. Maybe the series was getting

old for me or just the random plot twists and tares.

I think that I am being a little hard on it because

it is the final book and the ending, which is about

as abrupt and unsatisfying as falling off a cliff

into a pool full of starved sharks, disappointed me.

It did not feel like it should have ended that way

and it seemed as though Adams rushed it. "I love

deadlines. I love the wooshing noise they make when

they go by." Adams said this and I get the feeling

that he had missed several of these deadlines before

finally slapping an ending on the book and handing it

in. Great book and brilliant as ever but not the

major finale that some fans might be expecting.

If you are a fan of the series you’ll like this final installment. You really need to read the whole series.
I loved the unexpected angle of view on the story. Pieces of pure philosophy here and there are concise and really up to the point. I found a couple of valuable psychological advices in the book.
