Science Fiction Masterworks Volume 39. eGod. As such a situation could lead to tragic results, I have now been careful to insert cross-references in both books. Though this story is set more than a billion years in the future, computer technology has already almost caught up with me.

Sir Arthur Charles Clarke was born in Minehead, England, in 1917 and now lives in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He is a graduate and Fellow of King’s College, London, and Chancellor of the International Space University and the University of Moratuwa near the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Modern Technologies. Sir Arthur has twice been Chairman of the British Interplanetary Society.

Not far from the city the color of the ground had changed abruptly to a dull gray, and Alvin knew that he was . Hundreds of miles later, the ground rose sharply and the desert returned.

Not far from the city the color of the ground had changed abruptly to a dull gray, and Alvin knew that he was passing over the bed of one of the lost oceans. Once Diaspar must have been very near the sea, though there had never been any hint of this even in the most ancient records. Old though the city was, the oceans must have passed away long before its founding. Once Alvin halted his ship above a curious pattern of intersecting lines, showing faintly through the blanket of sand

They contain some interesting ideas and mild adventures. The books are a good example of "hopeful" science fiction, exploring possibilities of human flourishing. The accompanying 'Sands of Mars' is rather slighter in scope, dealing merely with the colonisation of Mars. Much of the planetology is of course very dated, and wrong, but this does not really detract from the romance of the adventure of discovery and exploration the author describes.

said Khedron, but I knew you would call sooner or later. This confidence annoyed Alvin; he did not like to think that his behavior could be predicted so accurately. I am trying to find a way out of the city, he said bluntly. There must be one, and I think you could help me find it. Khedron was silent for a moment. There was still time, if he wished, to turn back from the road that stretched before him, and which led into a future beyond all his powers of prophecy.

One thing that I need to mention specifically is the prophecy made by Clarke in this novel.

The story is about Alvin, a Unique, who tries to escape from the city of Diaspar, just because he wants to find out what lies outside his confined city. Once he manages to get out, he will change the fate of not just his city, but the entire humanity. This novel is full of dialogues concerning science, philosophy, religion and psychology. One thing that I need to mention specifically is the prophecy made by Clarke in this novel. In the future city of Diaspar, once in a very long life span of the citizen of Diaspar, they will be an artist. Their art pieces will be displayed in the city, and the other citizens vote.
