They say that opposites attract. This was my first Lisa Kleypas novel and I can definitely say that she has just gained yet another fan! Book Stats: ▪ Genre/Category: Contemporary Romance ▪ Steam Caliber: Extremely steamy! ▪ Romance: Slow-burn. He is visited by a ghost, who only he can see; their interactions made me smile more than once and out right laugh several times.

The Friday Harbour series of women's fiction novels is set in San Juan Island just off the Washington State Coast - romantic and varied, with rocky shore.

Only 12 left in stock (more on the way). Like almost everyone reading this book, I have read and re-read almost everything Lisa Kleypas has written so I know what she is capable of. Black's character read 2 dimensional, and in hindsight, it could be because he had no soul (I read a fantasy/paranormal romance with a similar theme and the soulless heroine came across the same way).

Dream Lake is officially book number two in Lisa Kleypas' Friday Harbor Series although I consider Christmas at Friday Harbor as book one so this would in all actuality be Book 3. This particular series is full of warm fuzzies and has just a sweet touch of what I am going to call the wo. . This particular series is full of warm fuzzies and has just a sweet touch of what I am going to call the woo woo. It isn't PNR by any means and most certainly remains a contemporary romance but it has a touch of the what if or as my son would say the "hey it could happen" to it.

They say that opposites attract. But what happens when one of them has been devastated by betrayal and the other is so damaged and jaded that his heart is made of stone? In New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas's Dream Lake, readers well enter the world of Friday Harbor, an enchanting town in the Pacific Northwest where things are not quite as they seem and where true love might just have a ghost of a chance...

Alex Nolan is about as bitter and cynical as they come. One of three Nolan brothers who call Friday Harbor home, he's nothing like Sam or Mark. They actually believe in love; they think the risk of pain is worth the chance of happiness. But Alex battles his demons with the help of a whiskey bottle, and he lives in his own private hell. And then, a ghost shows up. Only Alex can see him. Has Alex finally crossed over the threshold to insanity?

Zoë Hoffman is as gentle and romantic as they come. When she meets the startlingly gorgeous Alex Nolan, all her instincts tell her to run. Even Alex tells her to run. But something in him calls to Zoë, and she forces him to take a look at his life with a clear eye and to open his mind to the possibility that love isn't for the foolish.

The ghost has been existing in the half-light of this world for decades. He doesn't know who he is, or why he is stuck in the Nolans' Victorian house. All he knows is that he loved a girl once. And Alex and Zoë hold the key to unlocking a mystery that keeps him trapped here.

Zoë and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow. But sometimes it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark, and sometimes love can reach beyond time, space, and reason to take hold of hearts that yearn for it...

FINAL DECISION: I struggled and struggled with how to rate this book because I loved the couple, but ultimately felt that the story didn't do them justice. I would read parts of it again because some interactions were amazing, but it didn't work for me as well as a whole.

THE STORY: Alex Nolan is the youngest son of a pair of alcoholic parents and that has made him cynical and jaded and on his way to following in his parents' footsteps. After his divorce, Alex recognizes that he will be alone. And then he is not alone when he finds that a ghost searching for his identity and his past attaches himself to Alex. Zoe Hoffman is gentle and sweet and everything that Alex knows he will destroy if the two get involved. Zoe, however, sees something good in Alex that calls to her even as her own life has challenges dealing with her elderly grandmother.

OPINION: Some books are challenging to read and some are challenging to decide what I think of them. This book started out really slow for me and I thought it might be worse than the second book in the series which was okay but not fantastic.

But when we got into Alex's struggle with his drinking and his relationship with Zoe begins to develop, I just fell in love with these characters and their relationship. The gentle way that Zoe overcomes Alex (who doesn't recognize or want to acknowledge that he longs for commitment and love) was just magical. I loved their interactions which felt real and frank and some really amazing character development.

That middle third to half of the book was amazing.

But the resolution was too quick and too contrived for me. Zoe and Alex deserved something better. I just didn't buy it. And that might have something to do with the ghost story which didn't work that well for me.

This book was a mixed bag for me, but the characters are ones that I will continue to think about and those middle pages are ones that I will re-read. But ultimately, the whole of the book meant that I couldn't give it more stars. I liked the book, but while the characters were amazing, the overall story was only okay.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book takes place at the same time as the second book in the series.

CONNECTED BOOKS: DREAM LAKE is the third book in the Friday Harbor series. It is not really necessary to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one although the overlapping characters and timeline make this book better after reading the other two.

STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

'Dream Lake' tells the story of two people, Alex and Zoe, who have both been hurt immensely, but in very different ways. Alex was the youngest child of two alcoholics who ignored him, and who has become an alcoholic himself as an adult, and Zoe's ex-husband had an affair behind her back. When they meet, they are attracted to each other almost instantly, but both are wary about admitting it. Because he has never known what it feels like to have someone really care about him, Alex is very suspicious and even afraid of Zoe's growing attraction towards him. But despite this, Alex and Zoe develop a friendship, and are there for each other when the other needs them. Alex helps Zoe remodel a home for her and her elderly grandmother to live in, and Zoe helps Alex get through his withdrawal from alcohol when he decides to quit drinking. In addition, up until the very end of the story, Alex has a ghost following him around wherever he goes; he does not know who the ghost is, or where he came from, but it is up to him to find these things out.

I had been looking forward to reading this story for a while, and I was not disappointed by it. Despite his bitter attitude and his dependency on drinking for the first half of the story, I still found Alex to be an interesting and likeable character. I couldn't help feeling sorry for him as I learned about what he had been through, including a very difficult childhood and then a mistake of a marriage. But as he and Zoe fell for each other, Alex was able to realize that not everything in life was out to get him, and I was glad to see him change for the better as the story progressed.

If you have read Rainshadow Road, another book in the Friday Harbor series, you will see that many of the events in Dream Lake are also described in that book, from a different point of view. But Dream Lake is still a very interesting read, and I highly recommend it!
