Night Mare is a fantasy novel by American writer Piers Anthony, the sixth book of the Xanth series. In the book, Xanth must contend with a barbarian invasion from Mundania. Its only hope lies in the talents of the Magicians of Xanth and an exiled night mare, sent to the world of waking with the dire message: "Beware the Horseman. So begins Piers Anthony's 38th Xanth novel, in which Irrelevant Candy, looks at her reflection in the water of the shallow well and sees luxuriant midnight black hair to her breathtakingly slender waist, matching dark eyes in a lovely face. A torso coming yea-close to absolute perfection. She was man's desire.

Xanth (/ˈzænθ/ ZANTH) is a fantasy world created by author Piers Anthony for his Xanth series of novels, also known as The Magic of Xanth. Anthony originally intended for Xanth to be a trilogy, and after the success of the first three books expanded the series to nine books. A devoted fan base persuaded the author to continue writing the series, which is now open-ended.

For someone who hasn’t read any of the Xanth novels, this book was very interesting.

I think I still have a few of the Xanth series floating around in my paperback boxes. For someone who hasn’t read any of the Xanth novels, this book was very interesting. In my opinion I felt that the middle was a little boring but the ending made up for it. I do think that if others want to read this book they should read the first Xanth novel to get a better understanding.

Probably one of the best and most energetic Xanth novels, this one lets us finally see the Magicians and Sorceresses in battle! Serious battles too, not just little skirmishes, and we get to see how each one uses their own styles. The book is worth reading for that alone. It's a bit more violent than some of the other books for that reason, but deeply satisfying to see everybody using their talents to stop the next Wave.

Other than the bad guy, there aren't too many new characters here, and there are LOTS of characters, so this is strictly for people who have read most or all of the previous novels. Mare Imbri, the theoretical main character, will neither stand out overmuch in the crowd nor particularly bother anybody. She does get a few good moments during the book, and this is one of the VERY rare Xanth novels that isn't dripping with wishful sexism - in fact, the ladies of the novel theoretically get some major wins. Alas, this won't stop the rest of the series from being painfully misogynistic, but at least there is nice reprieve in this book.

Night Mare is the first Xanth novel that is truly suspenseful and I found myself glued to my easy chair because I couldn't stop reading. The plot was very intense and there was more death here than in any other Xanth novel to this point. I loved the first five books with great passion but they lacked the intensity of this one. This was more than just a quest with difficulties to be overcome... It was a life and death struggle for not only the survival of Xanath as we know it but for the life of every character that we really ever cared about!
The first fifty pages or so were difficult to get through as the main character is a night mare and a profound suspension of disbelief is key to the enjoyment of these fantasy books. If you are too literal in your outlook you won't last ten pages into a Xanth book... But what amounts to a magical horse, from a parallel universe, questing against a mundane invasion wave was almost too much for even me (a D & D geek from back in the day). But I stuck with it because I love the way Anthony writes and I was rewarded with a story that was epic in scale and without peer in its relentless plot.
I rarely do spoilers in these short reviews but suffice to say : Buy this book whether or not you have ever read a Xanth novel and you will be treated to a wild ride that will leave you gasping for more!!! I can't wait for the next one... :)

I think this is my last Xanth book. Although entertaining a few books ago, they all have too much of a pattern. The end was a slight surprise, but I was forcing myself to finish this book

an ebook; what started out as a trilogy is ever expanding as Piers Anthony takes you on adventures in the land of Xanth. NIght Mare can be read as a stand alone or in the series order but expect fun, action, drama and adventure! A roaring good book and series that everyone, kids included, should read!

I read this series 40 years ago. It is no longer in print, but should be. I have been purchasing it for my early teens niece, who very much enjoys reading. And has also enjoyed reading this series.

I began reading Piers Anthony when I was a teenager. As an adult I wanted to go back and reread the stories to see if my perception had changed. The book was still interesting and I did pick up on little subtleties I missed as a teenager. Whether you are young or old a good book.

I've always loved the Xanth novels. I'm rereading them for at least the 15th time.
