The compulsive squirreling away of stores by King Mahrtuhn I and all his successors was now paying off. The heavy rain of the day before had not been needed, not with the city’s steady supply of clear, cold water from the spring-fed lake within the bowels of the mountain upon which New Kuhmbuhluhnburk had been built.

When the last portions of the creature that Schiepficker intended to save had been immersed in the preservative and the containers sealed, the zoologist washed and dried his hands, then nodded to Corbett. Thanks again for your help, Jay. Now I guess we’d best get on the horn and tell Sternheimer of my findings and suppositions.

The final book of the Bili the Axe story arc is a thrilling read. As the 11th book in the Horseclans series, Robert Adams finished what I consider to be the main story line from the first book in the series. The rest of the books in the series were interesting, but the Bili the Axe story was what garnered Adams his fans and their loyalty for the millions of books he sold. The rest of the series, while very good, never had the mojo that the first eleven books did.

In this book, Adams finishes off Bili the Axe. He ends the story of Bili’s adventures in the kingdom of New Kumbuhluhn and sews up most of the plot although he left some room to write more stories down the road, a road he never got to. Here we find the Erica Arment reunite with her Witch Kingdom associates and return to Florida. While a few mentions of the Witch Kingdom show up in the 17th volume of the series, it was never brought up again in the rest of the books. Sir Geros Lahveetos plays a major role here, but along with Bili, never appears in another Horseclans novel.

Maybe that’s why this book is so special in my collection. It really represents a dividing point in the series. Adams supposedly had planned for additional books, but his early death at the end of the 1980s occurred before anything could be written. As a result, Bili’s death at the end of the volume represents the farthest point in time in the series. The rest of the books were set before the Horseclans #1 point in time or were part of a two book story arc set right after Book #2. I really think Adams was writing more books at this time in other series and let the Horseclans slide down his priority list.

In any event, Horseclans fans will love this book. They will turn the pages quickly reading through the fast paced action, so please take my advice and savor this book. It is quite a good piece of fiction for the pulp fiction genre. Adams was at the top of his game writing this volume. The action is crisp, the dialogue is good, and the scenery is vibrant. The story is just good swords & sorcery.

I ordered several of these books. I read most of them years ago, but was never able to complete the set. Now that I am old and retired, I came across the ones I had and decided to try to find those that I was missing and read the entire set in order. I received very fast and accurate service from this retailer.
