Collected by the author over nearly thirty years, the photographs in Devon Aerodromes illustrate Devon's aviation heritage, and will be of interest to both aviation enthusiasts and local people alike. Beginning in 1910,early aviators including Claude Grahame-White and Samuel Cody feature before the First World War. Private flying returned to Devon in 1919, and the colorful interwar years are illustrated by the barnstormers, flying circuses and the early aerodrome situated high on Haldon Moor. The outbreak of the Second World War saw the pre-war flying boat base at Mount Batten and the airports at Exeter, Plymouth, and Teignmouth playing important roles, together with the new military airfields at Chivenor, Dunkeswell, Upottery and Winkleigh. The build-up to D-Day saw the USAAF Ninth Air Force move into Exeter and Upottery. Post-war operations brought a reduction in military flying, with the airfields at Exeter and Plymouth returning to civil use, while Chivenor was used to train generations of jet fighter pilots. Devon Aerodromes is rounded off with a county-wide section, which portrays a variety of incidents that have brought the aeroplane to the attention of both press and public at locations other than recognized airfield sites.
