In late 1917 Pierre Fatou and Gaston Julia each announced several results regarding the iteration ofrational functions of a single complex variable in the Comptes rendus of the French Academy of Sciences. These brief notes were the tip of an iceberg. In 1918 Julia published a long and fascinating. Daniel S. Alexander ist Professor an der Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, USA. Show all. This book describes the history of Complex Dynamics from the works of Ernst Schroder to the works of Fatou and Julia. It pays particular attention to the contributions of Paul Montel Theory of Normal Families, and contains a brief overview of the history of that subject. Also discussed in detail are the contributions of Gabriel Koenigs in the late 1880s.

The contemporary study of complex dynamics, which has flourished so much in recent years, is based largely upon work by G. Julia (1918) and P. Fatou (1919/20). The goal of this book is to analyze this work from an historical perspective and show in detail, how it grew out of a corpus regarding the iteration of complex analytic functions. This began with investigations by E. Schroder (1870/71) which he made, when he studied Newton's method.

Median stable distributions are an extension of traditional (mean) stable distributions. The program seeks generalizations of well-known statistics to new domains. If least squares is the linear model version of the sample mean, then where are the linear model versions of other statistics, like the quantiles).

Schröder (1870/71) which he made, when he studied Newton's method. In the 1880's, Gabriel Koenigs fashioned this study into a rigorous body of work and, thereby, influenced a lot the subsequent development. But only, when Fatou and Julia applied set theory as well as Paul Montel's theory of normal families, it was possible to develop a global approach to the iteration of rational maps. This book shows, how this intriguing piece of modern mathematics became reality.
