This Symposium provides an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of scientific bases of technologies used in radioactive waste management (RWM).

This Symposium Series began at the 1978 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. Currently, it occurs at the annual MRS Fall Meeting during even years; during odd years, the Symposium is hosted at locations throughout the world where there is involvement in radioactive waste management. This Symposium provides an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of scientific bases of technologies used in radioactive waste management (RWM).

The following sessions were held: salt (Europe, WIPP); basalt; granite; tuff; salt (pi); waste form development and characterization; leaching and waste package investigations; repository and far-field related investigations; and modeling. Individual papers were processed for inclusion in the Energy Data Base.

Cite this publication. The 26th Symposium on the Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management was held December 1–4, 2002, as part of the MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts (Symposium II). The symposium attracted 136 abstracts from authors representing 15 countries, and 109 of those papers are published here. The 2002 symposium occurred at a propitious time.
