I had a dear friend from NY whose father brought him to Mama Leone's restaurant on a regular basis when he was young. He loved her and was fortunate to have her as a friend who took the time to teach him many favorites. He spent his life in various business ventures but never forgot what Mama Leone taught him. It was pure bliss to be invited to his house for dinner. When I saw this cookbook available I had to have it. What a joy it is. The recipes are incredible and delicious and it even gives you the background stories of the restaurant.
Dream
LOVE Mama Leone's soups and sauces served locally. . But they're not in the book :( Still, MANY great recipes to cook up; just need to substitute canned or frozen for where recipe's rely on fresh (which is not ALWAYS possible, out of season)

Mama Leone's son, Gene, documents the provenance and progress of Momma Leone's before he presents its recipes. The restaurant served thousands of diners every night, through most of the 20th century. A ton of schrimp changed hands the night the restuarant was sold. Among noteworthies who ate there were Presidents Truman and Eisenhauer and Enrico Caruso. The last talked Moma's husband into letting her start. Photographs convey the spirit and context of the place.
The book translates recipes meant for thousands into family size portions. It sometimes shows you a basic recipe like Minestrone and then Mama's tweaked version. This book comes with lets you make comfort food from a bygone era, e.g., yummy spaghetti sauce spiked with liver. Its continued publication (regrettably minus the funky dust cover) speaks for itself.

I grew up with this cook book and everything my Dad ever made out of it was always exceptional. Now as an adult, I felt I should have a copy to duplicate some of those wonderful childhood meals. I found it Used on Amazon and I can't wait to dig in to it. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who loves Italian food and likes to spend time in the kitchen preparing a good meal.
