Their recipes for & Espagnole' are virtually identical, except that Ms. Mendel's explanation seems just a bit better for the amateur; however, I prefer Barrenechea's overall result.

JM- I wanted to show people how to translate those great tapa dishes to their own table. JM- I show you in this book how to adapt many tapa dishes to be starters or even main courses-the point is, not to set them apart, but to integrate them. On the other hand, "tapas" are very trendy in the US and England. But they are not exactly the same as in Spain.

Janet Leslie Cooke (born July 23, 1954) is a former American journalist. She won a Pulitzer Prize in 1981 for an article written for The Washington Post. The story was later discovered to have been fabricated. Cooke subsequently returned the Pulitzer, the only person to date to do so, after admitting she had fabricated stories. The Pulitzer was subsequently awarded to Teresa Carpenter, a nominee who had lost to Cooke.

Of the several books I have on Spanish cuisine, a few with color photographs, impressively made, I keep referring back to Janet Mendel's 'Cooking in Spain'. Ms. Mendel is an American journalist living in Spain and who knows Spanish cuisine by first hand experience and interaction with her Spanish neighbors and families. She is the definitive and foremost expert on Spanish cooking...better, in my opinion that a few books I have written by other Spanish authors.

Her books go beyond the clichés of tapas and paella. She knows real, everyday (and fiesta days!!) cooking.

I enjoy the anecdotes that accompany most recipes that are clearly written and explained. Trust her books. I personally recommend this one as an excellent starting point as everything is covered from tapas to desserts. You will learn much from this book than 'just' recipes!

How do I know? I live here in Spain since 14 years and this is THE book I recommend to non-Spanish speaking friends. All of them are thrilled and thankful to own this book.

This is without a doubt the best cookbook I've found to represent true recipes from Spain! I'am from Spain and this cookbook took me back to when my Grandmother was cooking! It has all the traditional recipes and simple tapa recipes for entertaining. This book is a must have for anyone serious about true Spanish cooking!!!
I picked up this cookbook while living Spain, wanting an English language cookbook to help me prepare the ingredients I found at my local market. I've continued using this cookbook almost weekly for the past 8 years, because the recipes are so fantastic, so simple and so authentic.
