Very solid thoughts on preaching. A collection of essays, so not necessarily an overview of all there is to say. But this guy sure is readable, like a caring, wise grandfather writing in a bygone age. But that does not at all mean that what he says is not 100% applicable.

Though I believe we can often idolize preachers and "the sermon," this was filled with insights and wisdom on the 21st Century art of public speaking in church. It was worth the read and helps to guide anyone who is teaching on behalf of Jesus.

Excellent book. It has been taught in Bible colleges for many years.

Haddon Robinson heard a sermon when he was a teenager that lasted for an hour, but seemed only like twenty minutes. He was amazed, because most sermons last for twenty minutes and seem like an hour. Robinson wondered to himself, "I wonder what makes the difference?" He has spent his entire career finding this out and sharing it with us.

The opening chapters portray his understanding of biblical preaching. He shares here and there about some of his own failures and successes in the pulpit. He believes that we must discover the "big idea," the central thought of the scripture passage being preached. He contends that before we tell people what the passage means for us, we must discover what it meant to the original author and to the original audience. The way we apply the text must be consistent with the meaning given by the author, otherwise, we haven't really preached the word of God, we've preached our own opinion, and therefore, we have lost our authority.

Robinson also mentions the importance of not only explaining the text and applying the text, he also believes strongly that we preachers should tell people specifically what we want them to do (p. 90). At the same time, he warns about making a particular application binding for all, because people will apply the text to their lives in different ways.

There are a couple of short, concluding chapters about how to preach on money.

Scott Gibson does a nice job of lovingly compiling this "greatest hits" collection of Haddon Robinson's teachings. It's a good introduction to his thought on homiletics, though you will definitely want to get Robinson's seminal book "Biblical Preaching."

This is a good book on preaching. One of the things that stood out to me is how he tries to imagine what types of people will be in the congreation and speak to them as individuals. He wants them to get an application from his message and not mere information download.

This book sums up all that Robinson teaches. It is the abstract of his life long teaching on preaching. I loved it!
