What Can I Do shows that global mission is something we all can be part of in tangible ways. And while that might include going on a short term mission trip or providing financial support, there are many more ongoing and holistic forms of engagement. This book helps readers see that the roles they already have-business leader, scientist, teacher, student, parent, or neighbor-can provide ways to engage in global mission. Mission is what we were created to do. It includes evangelistically calling people to follow Jesus wherever we go, whatever we do. But it's more than that.

Where the Red Fern Grows, I can remember tearing up while reading this.

This book is written primarily for Christians and offers practical ways to respond to global atrocities like poverty, disease, trafficking, etc. Shannen Parsaca. Where the Red Fern Grows, I can remember tearing up while reading this. Jenny H. Books and quotes galore.

While “missions” used to be the territory of experts and missionary professionals, globalization has made the issues and needs of our world accessible to average Americans. Many American Christians feel overwhelmed by the scope of the brokenness in the world and conclude all they can do is go on with their lives. Others respond by giving and praying, and still others want to do more. What Can I Do shows that global mission is something we all can be part of in tangible ways. And while that might include going on a short term mission trip or providing financial support, there are many more ongoing and holistic forms of engagement. This book helps readers see that the roles they already have—business leader, scientist, teacher, student, parent, or neighbor—can provide ways to engage in global mission. Mission is what we were created to do. It includes evangelistically calling people to follow Jesus wherever we go, whatever we do. But it’s more than that. This book will help us explore the way our ordinary, everyday tasks of work and life can be part of God’s mission to heal a broken world.

It’s often hard to think about or articulate the worlds problems in a way that actually impact the day to day. This book helps with that.

As a missionary serving overseas, I had hoped this book might be something we could endorse as we share our ministry with those stateside. However, there are several significant flaws with Mr. Livermore's thesis. First, Mr. Livermore presupposes that our primary purpose here on earth is to make it a better place. "You were made for a place where everyone enjoys: Everlasting worship. Perfect sex. Life-giving work. Healthy babies. Authentic relationships. This is how it was intended to be. And God invites us to join the work of making this a reality again--heaven on earth." (p. 33) I'm not going to take time to refute kingdom theology--just saying. Second, his frequent misuse of the Biblical word, 'redemption', is very misleading. He says on p. 43 "Each of us contains the divine spark of God and was created to be a partner in moving creation forward to the consummation of God's purposes...We are invited to join God in redeeming this world." Jesus Christ sacrificed Himself and shed His blood to buy the human race back from the slavery of sin. Mr. Livermore's "missional" use of the word redemption minimises the great sacrifice of Christ and the redemptive benefits we receive from Him. Ephesians 1:7 "In Him [Jesus Christ] we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace." Mr. Livermore's use of "redemption" applies to any and everyone who does a good deed for fellow man or the environment thereby making the world a better place regardless of faith or doctrine. Third, Mr. Livermore uses every opportunity to denigrate traditional missionary efforts which include Bible teaching, evangelism, and church planting as modelled by the Apostle Paul. That said, "What Can You Do?" Remember Christ's words in "Matthew 28:19-20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen." Only by making disciples of Christ can the problems of world be addressed. And "heaven on earth? Titus 2:11-13 "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ." Heaven on earth will only occur when Christ returns to earth to reign with His saints.

I gave the book 2 stars because I agree that the world has many many problems as outlined by Mr. Livermore.

This book was fascinating and helpful. Author David Livermore brings the needs of the world to your doorstep. Not to give you a heavy-feeling, guilt-trip, Instead he gives you a freeing and empowering vision of how your seemingly insignificant life and work can touch on and impact a wide range of global concerns.

The book is extremely well written. Here is a brief excerpt which captures the flavor of the book - both a challenge to Christianity and a call for greater interaction with the needy and watching world.

From pg. 90: "If we encounter artwork that is degrading, unhelpful, or down-right evil, the best Christian respone isn't to make a sanitized Christian version of it. Crowd it out by making something better!"

Another excerpt shows that the book is more than an itemized list of problems but a personal guide for finding one's calling in life, complete with reflection questions,

From pg. 138: "No job, career, or cause is big enough to shape our eternal identity. Putting our whole selves into our work or into meeting th eneeds of the world will sabotage us. We need a deeper sense of calling that includes the call to deeper intimacy with Jesus--an identity that will last forever."

The author's international experience as a consultant and trainer who has visited more than one hundred countries, shines through. There is practical insight into cross-cultural concerns when it comes to ministering and sharing your gifts with others.

The best feature of the book are the numerous case studies and examples of real people connecting their work and God's greater global purpose for humanity. These examples flesh out the message of the book: the world has big problems, but there is a lot we can do right where we are to make a difference.

Reading this book might just equip you to make that kind of difference.
