I had this book for the Kindle and had no problems with it at all. This book provides a look at several of the things that pastors will face in their ministry, from actual ministry functions such as weddings and funerals, to the things that occur behind the scenes, such as caring for the family and personal finances. The authors are from a Baptist denomination. Overall, I found this book to be very helpful through the content presented, personal anecdotes, and real illustrations. Some of the things covered in this book, like changing churches and retirement, could catch a new pastor off-guard had he not read this book or similar material. The one thing that did irk me a bit though is how sometimes, what he was talking about seemed like a personal opinion but he said the pastor "should" do these things. Maybe it's just personal preference, but I think it would have been better for him to suggest these methods, rather than say you "should" do these things. However, this is not enough for me to say that it is a bad book. On the contrary, it was mostly helpful and easy to read, too. Chances are, I will come back to it once in a while in future years.

As an owner of Dr. Criswell's original version, I found this updated book to be very useful. I will admit I come from a more conservative theological viewpoint so I am already in agreement with most of the authors' presuppositions. If you are from a more liberal background you may not like what this book has to say about divorced pastors and the like. However, remember that these are men who are giving their interpretations and viewpoints based on their own experience and training. I also like the addition of other pastor's take on the different sections. I approached this book as I do any other work outside of Scripture by understanding ahead of time that I may not agree with all of it but I still found some very useful content. For those of you ladies out there upset because this doesn't address female ministers, I would suggest you review God's stance. It's no accident that there is a negative connotation to Deborah having to lead Israel during the period of the judges because the men weren't leading like they should. Doesn't make you inferior in any way, you have different roles and being the head of a church is not one of them.

This was one of the textbooks used in my Intro to Pastoral Ministry class and I can say I will constantly refer back to it in the future. It is not entirely exhaustive, but for the size of the book, it is jam-packed with practical information. The book covers just about every aspect of what a solid pastor's life should include. Everything is backed by Scripture, solid pastors and theologians are examined and cited, the appendices are just as noteworthy as the text, and there are suggested sources for further information. The book was published in 2007, but the content is relevant and applicable today. I will be sure to always have this book in my library.

Very gender biased. (Only males are called to preach) Refers to prosperity gospels more than once. Very little help in tackling the administrative and technical roles of a pastor.
Steep
The book is loaded with advice for pastors. While some of the issues are discussed in older works, this book brings with it a more modern setting for the same sort of issues pastors face. Good book.
