I went to the shelf to pull out other preaching books I’d read but hit the same walls. 10. Wibberding, James Richard. Learn to Preach Before Next Weekend.

James Wibberding, . iv. pastors the Seventh-day Adventist churches in Lansdale and Souderton, Pennsylvania, United States. Teach me to preach, one of my new elders requested. I went to the shelf to pull out other preaching books I’d read but hit the same walls. Then it struck me. My sermon writing process is simple. If I could excuse myself from rehearsing all I had learned, I might have something to teach beginners. So, I began to condense preaching to its basic elements. Telford, PA: Big Fish Publishing In. 2006.

Preach doctrine, preach all the doctrine that you know, and learn forever . Girolamo Savonarola, p. 481.

Preach doctrine, preach all the doctrine that you know, and learn forever more and more; but preach it always, not that men may believe it, but that they may be saved by believing it. Phillips Brooks, p. 480. Let the sermon thou hast heard be converted into prayer. Argument should be kept to books; preachers ought to have nothing to do with it,- at all events in the pulpit. There let them hold forth light, and let him, who will, receive it, and him who will not, forbear. God only can convince.

Whilst to preach by next weekend is possible technically, you will probably take more time to actually get to work out the content you want to deliver through prayer and research and then spend some time giving and recording test sermons to see how your delivery works in practice. However, this book is an excellent, if a bit short in actual content, primer for learning to preach and I am using it along with books with other approaches to create the all round direction I will need starting from scratch. I think a very useful primer.

This book is very practical and easy to understand! I recommend putting this to study for those who have been called to preach, or even if you just want to learn how to write a concise sermon.

To get a quick grasp of functional sermon writing then this is the book you need...

As a student of the word, that has graduated both from Moody Bible Institute, (B.Sc.) , Olford Ministries (B.A, with an emphasis in Expository Preaching, through Masters International School of Divinity,Evansville, Indiana), and a full time Pastor, I have learned the technical tools to be able to structure and deliver a message.

When I was was asked to teach other preachers how to do it, that have not been to a Bible college,I needed a method that was simple, Scriptural and applicable. I remembered I had purchased this book, and can say without reservation that it does exactly what I need it to do- communicate how to design and deliver a message that is Bible based, God honoring, and life changing.

What makes it so good? The book is bite sized. Each point is important, and each point is part of the larger picture, but he gives you just enough to be able to taste and apply. The difference in this book and others is the amount and rate of content delivery. This idea can be compared to drinking from a fire hose on full blast, and drinking from a cup in your hand- both provide a drink, but you will get more and keep more from the cup than you will with the hose. Sometimes, other books give too much information too fast, without assessing whether the reader has the ability to absorb what has already been given. Truly, too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing! The material in this book can be easily grasped by those that have no formal training, as well as those that need a refresher. This book offers a solid step by step methodology to be able to discover, design and deliver quality sermons over and over again.

If you are looking for a book that is small in size, but delivers a no a solid and sizable punch- this book is it. I am planning on ordering several copies of this book to give to my students as gifts and guides. Yes it IS that good.

I'm always skeptical of books with time in the title: Learn to Program Computers in 24 hours, Teach College in 10 minutes. . . but this book actually delivers. It's short enough to conceivably read in a week. And, it's packed with content.

The author introduces three elements that should be in every sermon: a life question, a biblical answer, and an application. Then he goes step by step through the process of building such a sermon. It's not just a one-size-fits-all approach. In many cases James presents alternate approaches and explains how each can be used to fit your particular text, subject or audience.

Before I close I must say a few words on style. The ideas are clearly presented and most of the key concepts are neatly packaged by illustrations that make them easy to recall when the book is set down. The author clearly mastered the subject before setting out to capture the essence in a book. That is truly a breath of fresh air after seeing so books apparently written by authors who "wanted to write a book" rather than authors who wished to fill a book with content!

As the quote attributed to Antonie de Saint-Exupery, "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." This small tome captures a tremendous amount of content, organizes it well, and presents it clearly. 5 stars!

Learn to Preach writes more simply and clearly than any other book I have seen regarding the topic of preaching. A layman can understand it. Its information has helped me, a preacher of over 20 years sharpen my deliveries. My purpose in choosing this book was to serve as a textbook for my laymen in a preaching class I offered. The book helped them to do great jobs in the pulpit.
