Over the past 3 years I have found the Disciplines devotions consistently thoughtful and spiritual. Usually they touch the common texts for the upcoming week and prepare one well for worship the next Sunday.

My wife and I have been using the Upper Room Disciplines each year since 1993. That means we have been through the 3-year cycle of the Common Lectionary almost seven times. Over the years, the scriptures have become more vivid and personal, and the readings consistently high-quality and excellent, improving over the years as well.
It is astonishing to me that the writers cover such as wide range of Christian faith traditions, from Salvation Army and Nazarene to mainline denominations. I recommend the UR Disciplines to any and all who will listen!

I am a fan of the Upper Room and used to subscribe to the paper version, so I was excited about the kindle edition. But after a few days, I returned it. It gives scripture references, but doesn't offer a way to link or access them, which means I have to try and slog through my kindle bible, or pull along a paper bible, which sort of defeats the purpose of the kindle. I tried a couple of times to use the search function with my kindle bible... and it was a really cumbersome process.

Here's what the Upper Room needs to do for future editions: INCLUDE the scriptures as part of the daily devotion. Especially for the ebook edition, this is such a no-brainer. You don't need to worry about wasting trees and it would mean that you don't have to try to click back and forth between a bunch of pages to get to the readings. Plus, you could then include translation versions chosen by the person who wrote the daily devotional.

I'm returning to Disciplines this year after many years using the UK Scripture Union Encounter With God series, which is also excellent. Compared to the mid nineties when I last used Disciplines it now has readers questions and guides for small group discussion/ individual use. I like following the lectionary as a way to lead into Sunday worship. I like using one writer for a week of comments, its enough time to get a feel for the writers views, and not too long. Its way too soon for me to say if this years Disciplines has great or soul stirring writing, its still very early in the year.

I think this guide is well suited to anyone who wants to be closer to God through study and prayer guided by holy scripture. The beginner will have enough guidance to get around in the book, and in the commentaries. The grey beards will have well trained thought full writers speaking from their hearts. It's only $10, where as the Scripture Union from the UK is over $40. I hope you find you are blessed in your study.

This was the first time I used the electronic version and found that I prefer it to the paper version. The devotions are good, but at times I got the feeling that someone wrote it because they were commissioned to do so and not because of their own great inspiration. I do understand that it is a American publication, but then I am also aware that they are publishing the book internationally, so would it be fair to ask for it to be more international and less American?
I did get the 2015 version and I have been using these for years so it cannot be too bad.

I have had a love-hate relationship with daily devotionals. Daily Bread Our Daily Bread Yearly Devotional Volume 2 has been a household staple for years. And we have tried many others. I find it to be a nice way to start my day and provide a focus or theme. But most devotionals are "single serving" and almost disposable. I was looking for something with more depth - introspection. The Upper Room was recommended by a friend. And all I can say is - wow! The suggested Bible readings are excellent selections. Each day has an in-depth discussion and prayer. I find myself re-reading Disciplines throughout my day. The discussion is more than uplifting. I find myself truly thinking about myself, my actions & activities, my day. Each week's writings are penned by a different author who explores a theme through the readings over seven days. My daily quiet time has evolved immensely. I will be a reader for life.

Upper Room Disciplines is a set of daily devotions for a calendar year based on the lectionary readings for that year. The authors of the devotionals are pastors or other good religious writers. The readings for each week are developed around a theme. Helps prepare for the Sunday sermon if your pastor follows the Revised Common Lectionary for sermon scriptures, as ours does. The best daily devotional book I am aware of. Since I started using the series several years ago on the recommendation of my pastor, I always buy the one for the next year in time to have it for Jan. 1.

As I start my day, I can read this devotional and become more centered and realize that I am here for a reason. I have a place and purpose, and I am loved in ways that can oft times be forgotten in the hustle and bustle of life. The devotionals give me encouragement and inspiration and help me inspire those who are in my circle of influence in all types of situations and circumstances we find ourselves in in life. I am so grateful to have it, because it really does make a positive lasting impact on me.!
The reason that this study is profound is because it follows the Methodist Lectionary of study and prepares one for the sermon. I attend a Wednesday "Lectionary" study at my church and on Sundays, I am prepared to understand a very deliberate sermon on the scriptures I've studied all week. My worship has taken on an entirely new meaning.
If your church follows the Methodist Lectionary, I highly recommend this daily reader.
