Dorothy Hunt is the founder of the San Francisco Center for Meditation and Psychotherapy. In 1986, Hunt asked Mother Teresa (now Blessed Teresa of Calcutta) for permission to compile a book of daily meditations using material from many sources including books written about Mother Teresa, other books of her meditations and reflections, interviews, talks given by Mother Teresa and unpublished material supplied by the missionaries of charity and co-workers of Mother Teresa. She gave the go ahead with one stipulation, that she make the book a prayer. "It is through prayer that we are brought closer to God, to his love for us and to his love within us. Everyone can reach this love through meditation, spirit of prayer, and sacrifice, by an intense inner life."

"Love" is organized around the liturgical calendar - Advent, Christmas, the Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost. Each liturgical season is organized by a theme. For instance, the first, Advent, is organized by Faith, Humility, Trust, and Love Begins at Home. Christmas is organized around The Family, and Christ Comes in the Poor.

Each section begins with the first Sunday or holiday of the cycle with a biblical quote for the week, followed by a tagline, e.g. "A Gift of God," and the meditation for each day. For the first Sunday of Advent, the meditation is "Faith is a gift of God. Without it there would be no life. And our work, to be fruitful, and to be all for God, and to be beautiful, has to be built on faith - faith in Christ, who has said, `I was hungry, I was naked, I was sick and I was homeless, and you ministered to me.' On these words of his all our work is based."

The book is a perfect gift for yourself and for others. Pastor Doug Stevens, a remarkable worker in the vineyard who leads the Leadership Connection in Northern California, is a friend. He told me about this marvelous book last year. He uses it daily. I purchased a copy for myself and am now following Doug's lead, reading it daily. These meditations are profound and provocative.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta was a Roman Catholic religious sister and missionary. In 1946, she experienced "call within a call" to devote herself to caring for the sick and poor. She founded the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor in Calcutta, India. Her order has established a hospice; centers for the blind, aged, and disabled; and a leper colony. She received the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work in 1979.
