Spectacular and sin! I've never seen those words together before. And who but John Piper could so brilliantly weave them into the same lyric as the global, purposeful glory of Christ! This man never ceases to inspire me to be more awestruck with the supremacy of Jesus. Chris Tomlin, Recording Artist, Song-writer and Lead Worshiper. John Piper delivers powerful biblical reassurances to bolster readers’ trust in the sovereignty of God and the supremacy of Christ when evil and tragedy come. If God governs the sinful acts of men, then does the devastation caused by those terrorists, dictators, murderers, cheats, and abusers discredit Jesus’ words: “All authority in heaven and earth belongs to me”? When heart-rending news comes of the latest accident, illness, or natural disaster, can we really believe that in Jesus, “all things hold together”? Though God has not answered all of our questions about sin and suffering, there are things he wants us to know, things he declares in his Word—such as what’s at stake in the “spectacular” sins of others and the horrible tragedies of this life; their global purpose, both historically and today; and what these events say to us personally. As John Piper works through these biblical truths, this book will bolster readers' trust in the utter sovereignty of God such that they'll be less timid in their witness and less afraid of whatever may come. It is also a joy-infused declaration that because everything occurs through Christ and for Christ and his glory, they are forever secure in him.

Pastoral, plain-spoken and profound. Here are two sample quotes, (1) “The apex of the glory of Christ is the glory of his grace—treating people infinitely better than they deserve—giving himself for the everlasting joy of the worst of sinners who will have him as their highest Treasure. And the apex of this grace is the murder of the God-man outside Jerusalem around A.D. 33. The death of Jesus Christ was murder. It was the most spectacular sin ever committed.” (2) “I pray that the Lord will weave cords of steel and silk into the fabric of your soul.” May it be so

“It is only a matter of time till the reality of the rest of the world comes home. And all the while we are called by Christ to go to them, love them, sacrifice for them, bring the gospel to them. The Great Commission is not child’s play. It is costly. Very costly. The coddled Western world will sooner or later give way to great affliction. And when it does, whose vision of God will hold? Where are the Christians being prepared for great global sorrows? Where is the Christian mind and soul being prepared for the horrors to come” (pg. 13)? This was penned in 2008, and in my estimation, it is proving true.

The world is rapidly changing. Christianity has lost it’s moral voice and authority in America and the West, and we find ourselves living in a country and world that is progressively hostile towards us. Orthodox Christian beliefs are now seen as bigoted, oppressive, and repressive. Christian Fire Marshals are being fired for the views on marriage, private businesses are being forced to serve those with whom their conscience and Bible disagree, private Christian Universities are being urged to changed their views on homosexuality or risk losing Federal funding, ISIS is beheading, clearing out, and murdering Christians, women, and children. Indeed it must be this way. Paul tells Timothy, “all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Tim. 3:12). For servants are not greater than their masters. If they persecuted Jesus, they most certainly will persecute his followers (paraphrase of John 15:20).

How are we to think about this changing wave of moralism that we find ourselves in? What is God’s purpose in these global acts of terror? What is ours role for the future? Where is our peace? Piper argues that our peace must be found and anchored in the sovereign God of the Bible. Not the wimpy western version; but the all-powerful, earth-shaping, universe-speaking into existence, wave-calming, dead-raising, life-breathing, sovereign creator God. He wants you to know, see, savior, and trust in the sovereignty of God - especially His sovereignty over sin. “My prayer is that as these great historical vistas of God’s sovereignty over sin take their place in your mind, they would have a profoundly practical effect in making you strong in the face of breath-stopping sorrows and making you bold for Christ in the face of dangerous opposition…I pray that the Lord will weave chords of steel and silk into the fabric of your soul” (pg. 97).

There are four impulses behind this book that Piper wants you to know about.
Why does God want us to know His sovereignty over sin?
Why does God not restrain sin more often?
How can we have faith and joy during the severity of the last days?
How was Christ glorified in a world of sin?

Piper answers these questions by looking at God’s sovereignty in five stories:
The Disobedience of Adam
The Fall of Babel
The Sale of Joseph into Slavery
The Sinful Origin of the Son of David
The Betrayal of Judas, the Suicide of Satan, and the Salvation of the World.

If you’ve never studied the sovereignty of God I would recommend you start here. The book is short, just a little over one hundred pages, which makes for a quick read. And the writing is more pastoral than academic.

The sovereignty of God is not just a study of an attribute of God. It frames the events of the world within the all-powerful, good, steady, and righteous hands of God. It is an essential doctrine to understand. Not understanding God’s sovereignty over sin, world-events, life, death, and everything else in between, leads to burnout, frustration, a lack of joy, and possibly drifting from the faith. The western church - over the past 70 years of so - has been fed a wimpy version of God. A God that is more about you than Him. A God that serves you and lives for you. Yes, God loves you, but He doesn’t live for you. God is about God! And that is the greatest truth for every man, woman, and child. This wimpy theology leads to a default prosperity theology. And when that happens, once trials and hardships come - and they will come - you will feel abandoned by God. As Piper exhorts, “If pestilence takes out tens of thousands of my fellow citizens and half my church, my mental and spiritual survival will depend on more than the precious gifts of God’s intimacy” (pg.14).

Changed my life! First given to me, years ago, by my son! Really will mess you up, in a great way! Don't miss reading the introduction! So many times, we flip right past the introduction and dig into chapter one! Don't do that with this book! Piper does an extremely efficient and clear job of explaining "why sin had to happen!". Yes, "SIN HAD TO HAPPEN". Don't miss this one! An absolute must for the Christian and challenge for the unbeliever to read it!

Spectacular Sins is a breath of fresh air in a world that embraces the deistic notion that God has "left the building" and let the earthlings fend for themselves. The opposite error of fatalism, where an impersonal force controls everything capriciously is also rejected.

Piper strives to answer four key questions:

1. Why does God want us to know his sovereignty over sin?

2. Why does God not restrain sin more often?

3. How can we have faith and joy during the severity of the last days?

4. How Christ is glorified in a world of sin?

The author navigates the so-called problem of evil by making an appeal to the sovereigny of God and rooting the reader in his all-wise purposes. Piper ingeniously answers the questions above by illustrating how God uses sin through various examples such as the Fall of Man, the tower of Babel, Judas' betrayal of Christ, and the crucifixion of Christ.

Piper argues, "If you embrace the biblical truth that God ordains spectacular sins for the global glory of his Son, without God in any way becoming unholy or unrighteous or sinful in that act, then you will not shrink back from the cross of Christ as a work of God."

Spectacular Sins is one of the four required texts for the upcoming Veritas Class, "Mending the Achilles Heel" because it honestly answers one of the most thorny questions in Christian thought, namely, the problem of evil.

Read this book slowly and prayerfully. Let it encourage you during difficult days. Know that every sin is under God's sovereign control and will somehow advance his kingdom purposes in his time and for his glory alone!
