Lief, Barda, and Jasmine realize they are being hunted by Ols looking for a man, a boy, and a wild girl accompanied by a black bird and so must split up. Jasmine heads off on her own (with Filli and Kree of course) while Lief and Barda are joined by the mysterious boy Dain. After being attacked by pirates, the companions find themselves in a terrifying maze, the domain of the disgusting Glus, and no idea just where to find the sixth gem.

This sixth Deltora Quest book left me wondering if the three beloved characters would find the gem and escape right until the very end (though with two more books the answer should have been obvious). As usual, I wholeheartedly recommend The Maze of the Beast and the entire Deltora Quest series (which must be read in order) to people of all ages. It truly makes a wonderful family read aloud.

The stories are great, but paying over $4 for each "chapter" of the story is getting expensive! Each of these books are like a short story and only take a day to read - I am going to end up spending over $35 for what should be 1 book!

Unlike many similar series the Deltora Quest has managed to maintain its momentum, at least through this book six. The actual finding of the gem takes something of a back seat to the action, but that's because we are starting to build to the conclusion. Still a very worthwhile effort.

Wow almost all was lost this time! Separation, loss and defeat almost did the crew in. Is Lief really the next King? We shall get closer to that reality, can't wait!!!!!
