Mother goose and Nursey Rhymes (1963). A classic book covering an extensive amount of rhyming on every page. I found the rhyming to be enjoyable to read. The illustrations were perhaps the best part because they are well drawn out with detail and soft touch of light colors that make the pictures stand out. Although I found this book to be very enjoyable to me I can see where it might not be enjoyed for all children. This book is written in a different era, where the rhyming and wo Reed, Phillip. The figure of Mother Goose is the imaginary author of a collection of French fairy tales and later of English nursery rhymes. As a character, she appeared in a song, the first stanza of which often functions now as a nursery rhyme. This, however, was dependent on a Christmas pantomime, a successor to which is still performed in the United Kingdom.

Old Mother Goose Old Mother Goose, when she wanted to wander, Would ride through the air on a very fine gander. Old Mother Goose cont’d. Mother Goose had a house, ‘twas built in a wood, An owl at the door for a sentinel (porter) stood. She had a son Jack, a plain-looking lad, He was not very good, nor yet very bad. She sent him to market, a live goose he bought: Here! mother, says he, It will not go for naught. She then with her wand touched the lady so fine, And turned her at once into sweet Columbine. The gold egg in the sea was thrown out amain, When Jack jumped in and got the egg back again.

I purchased this book because it was part of my Caldicott Honor Library. I am collecting all the medal and honor winners so knew it already had the stamp of approval for quality. Although it is not a current rendition of the classic Nursery Rhymes, I was delighted with the illustrations which were neither too cutsey nor too boring. They captured my attention and enhanced familiar words. I guess I could say I was plesantly surprised. It is like alphabet books, they are all basically the same, however some just charm you more than others. This one was an unexpected charmer for me. Kind of like the the Holly Hobby pig tales (Toodles) or Tasha Tudor's Corgi tales.

This brought back my childhood. The woodcut art is beautiful. I had given my book to my grandson and then found myself missing it. Of course ,who else but Amazon would have it and at a great price?!
