Anant Pai popularly known as Uncle Pai, was an Indian educationalist and creator of Indian comics, in particular the Amar Chitra Katha series in 1967, along with the India Book House publishers, and which retold traditional Indian folk tales, mythological stories, and biographies of historical characters.

Amar Chitra Katha (ACK, "Immortal Picture Stories"), the flagship brand, was founded in 1967 and is a household name in India. The comic series was started by Anant Pai in an attempt to teach Indian children about their cultural heritage. He was shocked that Indian students could answer questions on Greek and Roman mythology, but were ignorant of their own history, mythology and folklore. Year: 1980. Publisher: Amar Chitra Katha.
Anant Pai strode the Indian comics industry like a colossus. Using the comics format he told stories from mythology, history and literature to generations of children. Uncle Pai, as he was known, wanted Indian children to be familiar with their heritage. He believed that it helped build self-esteem and confidence.
Anant Pai, who helped launch India's comic book industry in the 1960s with a series on mythology, history and Indian legends, has died. Mr Pai, 81, was the creator of the hugely popular Amar Chitra Katha series which told tales from the ancient Hindu epics, the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Called "Uncle Pai" by fans, his series sold more than 100 million copies. He received a lifetime achievement award at India's first comic convention held in Delhi last weekend.
