That Enid Blyton took The Six Bad Boys very seriously is revealed in her "Note for the Reader" at the beginning.

The Six Bad Boys book. This was one of the disturbing books written by Enid Blyton, dealing with themes of abandoned children and juvenile delinquency. Even though it has got a typically sentimental, fairy-tale, impossible ending, it disturbed me a lot. (view spoiler).

Six bad boys focuses on two boys, Bob Kent and Tom Berkeley, whose problems at home lead them to seek security and companionship with their peers, and they join a neighborhood group called the Four Terrors Gang (and it becomes the Six Terrors Gang). The cellar where they have their headquarters seems like a haven from the various miseries they suffer at home until the combination of aimlessness and rebellion lead the boys to commit petty crime. Soon, an appearance at the Juvenile Court changes the lives of all six boys.

Home Enid Blyton The Island of Adventure. Uncle Jocelyn, lost in his books, came out of them with a start. Aunt Polly, thinking of her husband’s very bad aim whenever he threw anything, gave a glance at the window. The island of adventure, . He had never seen the parrot and had forgotten that one had come to the house. He sat puzzling his head to know where such an extraordinary speech came from. She thought she had better keep it closed, or she might find everything in the room smashed by paperweights one day. Dear, dear, what annoying things did happen, to be sure!

Was in very good condition. Very pleased with the price. Wanted the book, since I lost the original 30 years ago.
I read this book when I was 8, meaning I had not been reading for very long. Maybe I was 8 1/2. I remember tha5t I read it on a Saturday morning and I became so absorbed in it that I missed lunch. My parents thought I must be next door. This is the first book that made me completely loose track of time. I guess I went into a kind of literary trance. I don't even remember the plot, but I sure identified with the bad boy of the title, because you see, that's when my parents, teachers and everyone called me. I can say that this book made me feel more at home in the world, less alienated.

The next book that carried me away was Black Beauty, read at age 9 (early 1950s, before TV.)

I later read the complete Famous Five and Secret Seven books, all by Edid Blyton. I was a big fan. She was a great children's author.
