Silver Brumby Kingdom, illustrated by Annette Macarthur-Onslow - Silver Brumby Whirlwind . Still, a suitable ending to an amazing series

Silver Brumby Kingdom, illustrated by Annette Macarthur-Onslow - Silver Brumby Whirlwind /illustrated by Victor Ambrus - Son of the Whirlwind /illustrated. Still, a suitable ending to an amazing series. I just wish Mitchell could have retained some of the magic of her previous books, there are many unanswered questions, and I miss the characters of the previous novels. Perhaps after Thowra died, Elyne lost some of her passion?

This is the sixth of the Silver Brumby series. Sadly it is not a patch on the first four. It's still a decent horsey read about the wild horses of the Australian south-west. This follows directly from Silver Brumby Whirlwind. Disappointingly in this one the horses don't talk as they did in the earlier books. Victor Ambrus' illustrations make them all look very hairy. I expect he was depicting them during winter.
Thowra the elderly silver brumby has in most ungentlemanly fashion left his filly mate Yuri (meaning moon) and gone back to the Cascade mountains - now that her foal is old enough she decides to follow him. Wirramirra (meaning wind) the white colt is anxious to see his father. But they head into winter and another horse they meet, Karee is captured by cattlemen as a riding horse. As the colt and his dam struggle on their quest you do start to wonder if it is pointless. A nice touch is that they meet a son of Baringa, so Thowra's son and great-grandson are together. There is no real resolution and I gained the impression that Mitchell could not bring herself to write that Thowra had died in the mountains that gave him birth.
Devoted readers of the series will of course want to read this book, and anything else by the wonderful writer Elyne Mitchell. But it's not her best, and I wouldn't start getting to know her characters so late in the series. Read The Silver Brumby and Silver Brumby's Daughter first.

Thowra decided not to stick around with the new chick for more than about a year, because he felt something else calling him.

The woman can't let it go at that, and goes to she if she can find him. She has a more than interested male third party tag along for the rider, so to speak.
DEAD-SHOT
A young stallion makes a difficult journey to meet his famous father. In the way he fases the dangers he proves to be a worthy son of the whirlwind!

I think this book was great. It was about a son of Thowra,Wirramirra, last born son of the wind,Thowra. I think this book is one of the best books Elyne has made up,infact, it I could met Elyne, I would help her make up a new book, I have got plenty of ideas in my horsie loving mind.My favourite charater was Wirramirra, because he was in a terrible fight with another horse and he was nearly pushed over the edge of the cliff, but he some how pushed the other horse over the cliff. Yuri is good too, Oh,I wish I was horse, to gallop on fresh green grass. Son of the Whirlwind was really good to my mind.
