Blake and Morpurgo, both former holders of the British children's laureate honor, join their considerable talents in this touching Christmas story aimed at both older children and adults. In first-person narrative, a grandfather recalls for his grandchildren his amazing adventure long ago when he was a shepherd boy on the night Christ was born. On that night, the boy was sad to be left behind when his father and brothers went off to visit the baby born in Bethlehem. His graceful prose makes the unlikely story seem quite concrete and possible.

On Angel Wings is an unexpectedly beautiful bit of Christmas literature, accompanied by the remarkable and utterly unique art of Quentin Blake. I always have trouble delineating books into 'age appropriate' groups, maybe because noone even told me what I could or couldn't, should or shouldn't, read. This is a book I would recommend to readers (or listener) of any age. The book is related to the nativity, but I believe that it transcends religious beliefs. Still, if it is given as a gift, it would probably be best to give it to a Christian- their familiarity with other stories that put them in a better position to enjoy Michael Morpurgo's (the author of Wsr Horse) work.

In one week, this little book has become the one begged for nightly by our children. With Mr Morpurgo's recrafting of the Christmas story from the p-o-v of a shepherd boy, we are transported, too, on angel wings and reminded that God cares for all of us and is with us right where we are. On Angel Wings is charming, and will be one excitedly pulled down from the shelf year after year.

My 5 yr old daughter got this for Christmas from her Grandmother. I was really impressed by the pictures; they are bright and imaginative. The story is compelling, fun and rich.
