On Vacation with Tūtū is about a bunch of energetic children who think that vacation with Tūtū will be a breeze-just wild fun and games with no parents around to tell them what to do. Lynne Wikoff (takes) something most kids and parents can relate to and transformed it into an interesting lesson on being careful what you wish for. This book is wonderfully illustrated by Tammy Yee, one of Hawai'i's most well-known and loved artists. Yee has a talent for capturing the vibrance of Hawai'i and its people in her books and paintings.

Author Lynne Wikoff began writing in 1978, first as a newspaper columnist writing on parenting issues, then working in corporate communications, marketing and public relations, all the while wishing she had time to write for children. In 2000, she decided she'd never have enough time and began her first children's book, "A Butterfly Tale," published in 2005 by Island Heritage. Lynne is a graduate of UCLA and earned a master's degree in social work at the University of Hawaii.

For Kainoa, Nani, and little Mehana, being on vacation with Tutu means no bedtime, no baths, and no cleaning up. Being on vacation with Tutu is going to be the best fun ever--or is it? As Tutu's mynah bird Akamai says, "Tutu is smarter than you think."
Purchased this as a gift for my Mother in Law who lived in Hawaii for several years. She hasn't received it yet, but I'm sure it'll be great for her to read to her grandchildren - who call her Tutu.
In a Hawaiian family the tutu, or grandmother, is the one person everyone most respects and listens to. As Akamai (smart) the mynah bird says in this story, "Tutu knows best." Lynne Wikoff has shown just how patient and clever tutu's wisdom can be as she gets her grandchildren to want to do what they need to do, with Akamai's last "Tutu knows best" punctuating the satisfying conclusion. Tammy Yee's dynamic illustrations, in the palette of the islands, capture the calmness of tutu, the watchfulness of the mynah, and especially the headlong exuberant play of children who have been told they can do whatever they want. A treat for those familiar with Hawaii, but a universal story as well--fun with a gentle moral.
Excellent book to read with small children!
