I got this for my 2-year old, and it is a little advanced for him, but would be great for a slightly older child. Some of it is a little vague, since it is trying to cover anything and everything that a child might be afraid of, but if you weave in examples of what your child is actually afraid of, or use it as a conversation starter, it would work very well. The illustrations of the loving family are beautiful, and it has helpful tips in the back for care givers. It would be especially useful for a child whose grandparent is sick or in the hospital, as that is one example that is shown. It doesn't say what is going on, so I skim over that part for my son, but if it's something your family is going through it would be very helpful.

When my son started kindergarten, he was so shy he wouldn't talk to anyone (not even his teacher). When I asked him why, he said he was afraid to. I bought him this book, and several other in the series to help him overcome his fears and do better in school. So far, they have really helped him a lot. He has opened up more to his teachers and classmates over the past few years because these books helped him figure out how to cope with his fears and become more social. I would definitely recommend this and any other books in the series if your child is having problems you don't quite know how to fix on your own.

My 5-year-old grandson likes reading this book. It describes a variety of activities children can engage in to alleviate their fears. Family members, teachers, and friends are shown as people who can help children feel safe. I highly recommend it, as well as the other books by Cheri Meiners. Besides being well-written, the illustrations in each book depict children from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

These are a wonderful series of books -- I have purchased about 7 or 8 of these for my children and we read them regularly. The stories are simple for children to follow, but raise common issues that are hard for them to verbalize. They do a good job of coaching good values, good morals, and the development of a healthy character. I would have written these myself the same way, had I the talent and had I thought of it.

I would recommend the entire series to anyone. My child caught onto concepts very quickly. The writing is clear and the artwork is great. They are written like "nice lectures," but nice enough that my child would choose the books on her own. I partially think she was choosing them because understanding these concepts helps her feel more confident. The books that we have found most helpful are "Be Polite and Kind," "Cool Down and Work Through Anger," and "Share and Take Turns," but the entire series is great!!!

i don't like the advice given to children.. very generic and a lot of the figures suggested as "trustworthy" could actually be people to be weary of !

Kids learn when we teach them something in form of a story, this is kind of advise book, "do this", " do not do this" .
Good advice for children of all ages. What to do when you are afraid is so helpful! Easy text to understand and to put into practice.
