Jean Van Leeuwen is the author of more than fifty children's books, including picture books . My three-year-old son has enjoyed all of the Oliver and Amanda Pig books, and so have I. Oliver and Amanda live in an idealized all-American family, with parents in traditional roles

Jean Van Leeuwen is the author of more than fifty children's books, including picture books, Easy-to-Read books, and middle-grade fiction. Ms. Van Leeuwen now lives in another small town north of New York City with her husband, Bruce Gavril. Oliver and Amanda live in an idealized all-American family, with parents in traditional roles. However, the stories describe realistic aspects of relationships which can be identified by most children and adults - the frustration of a mother over her naughty kids, the battles between siblings, the closeness as well as boundary between friends.

Oliver and Amanda Pig). by. Jean Van Leeuwen, Ann Schweninger (Illustrations). Using their cache of already published easy-to-read books, Puffin launched their Easy-to-Read program. Though the quality of stories in this series is uneven, some of them are superb. Like most other beginning-to-read series, Puffin Easy-to-Read is divided into reading levels.

This book is characterized as a Level Two reader, which is described as "reading together, short sentences, simple dialogue".
The stories are interesting with colorful and cute illustrations by Ann Schweninger. This particular book sees Grandmother Pig coming for a visit. Both Amanda and Oliver are initially excited but when tired Grandma can't play with them as she used to, takes naps, and protests against noise, the piglets begin to wonder if Grandma's visit was a good idea. Of course, things get better, and I thought the author did a credible job of addressing the relationship between young and old and making the story easily accessible to young children. I'd recommend this series to children who are beginning to develop some measure of independence in their reading and have completed the level one readers. It also makes an excellent read aloud for younger children.

I bought my first Oliver and Amanda book eight years ago for my then toddlers. I bought the entire series and each new release and would have purchased more if more were available. They LOVED these books and wanted to read them over and over again. I have had two more children since who love these books as much as their older siblings did. These books make your child want to sit and listen to the stories. The stories are ones that children can really relate to. I cannot recommend these books highly enough for toddler to early elementary age children.

Grandmother is no fun. She can't read to Amanda because she keeps losing her glasses, and she can't help Oliver build with blocks because she can't sit on the floor. But she can tell stories, and sing songs... and soon Oliver, Amanda and Grandmother Pig are the best of Friends!!
