Varieties of African American Experience is a prophetic reflection on the moral, existential, and theological paradoxes inherent in radical comparison, by which I mean: comparison from no particular religious system or community

Varieties of African American Experience is a prophetic reflection on the moral, existential, and theological paradoxes inherent in radical comparison, by which I mean: comparison from no particular religious system or community. Paradoxes abound in such an intellectual act. Here, after all, we have the clear voice of an atheist theologian, of a humanist who cares deeply about religion and religious people, of a black intellectual who insists that the discourse around race and religion must not be restricted to black voices.

This survey of African-American inventors includes some familiar names, but more whose names are less recognizable than their work. The stories of these bright and ambitious individuals are about science, technology, and individual discovery, but also about what it means — and what it has meant — to be black in the United States. If you don't know much black history, then this book is better than the euro centric textbooks most American students have been whitewashed with. I would not choose this book for my own children's library. It denies the genius of several of the inventors, and flatout states that some weren't really inventors.

It is my contention that African American religious experience extends beyond the formation and practice of black Christianity

It is my contention that African American religious experience extends beyond the formation and practice of black Christianity. That is to say, historically African Americans have participated in a variety of traditions, such as Yorúbá religious practices (attention to the orisha or deities), Voodoo (Vodou), Islam, and humanism. Much of the discussion concerning these traditions has been conducted by anthropologists, sociologists, historians of religion, and those in the arts.

African-American history is the part of American history that looks at the history of African Americans or Black Americans

African-American history is the part of American history that looks at the history of African Americans or Black Americans. Of the 1. million Africans who were brought to the Americas until the 1860s, 450 thousand were shipped to what is now the United States. Most African Americans are descended from Africans who were brought directly from Africa to America and became slaves. The future slaves were originally captured in African wars or raids and transported in the Atlantic slave trade.

African-American literature is the body of literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent. It begins with the works of such late 18th-century writers as Phillis Wheatley. Before the high point of slave narratives, African-American literature was dominated by autobiographical spiritual narratives.

A high-quality history series places important topics of the African-American experience in context so that readers will understand the connection between black history and the sweep of America's story.
