Michael Bond, Hans Helweg. Olga da Polga is both the story of guinea pig Olga da Polga’s new life with the Sawdust family and thirteen complete, stand-alone stories disguised as chapters. Olga has real adventures, tells some tall tales to the various animals that visit her, including a hedgehog, a tortoise and a cat and intermixed with the tales are some really good pointers about the proper way to care for a pet guinea pig.

Olga da Polga is a fictional guinea pig, who is the heroine of a series of books for children written by Michael Bond and published between 1971 and 2002. Unlike Bond's more famous character, Paddington Bear, Olga is a teller of tall tales in the style of Baron Munchausen. The typical plot of each story is that something fairly ordinary happens to Olga, and she gives her animal friends a wildly exaggerated version of events, subsequently revealed to be untrue by what the humans say.

Charming story and illustrations! I read this aloud to my 5- and 8-year-olds and we all loved it and occasionally quote from it. Because it's written in slightly lofty British English (which I appreciate) I had to provide some explanations a few times, especially to my 5-year-old. And for the same reason, I'm glad I read it aloud rather than simply handed it off to the 8-year-old. At the end, both kids were begging for more, not to mention a new pet. Highly recommend for any child who loves animal stories!

You will love this precious book! It's so funny and humorous especially for a child's mind. I have this book as a child and loved reading it to my little one. The writing can be a little complicated to follow for a child (many ideas separated by commas) when you are reading out loud but this will not detract from the joy of the book.

This book is wonderful, my kids have me read it to them over and over. The illustrations and very nice and we are already looking for more Olga stories. Shipping from Europe took a little while but was actually faster to arrive than anticipated.

Along the way we meet the family she belongs to, her friends from their garden, and are entertained by both the tales about Olga, and the ones she creates for her friends. It's a low-key but charming book for those who love animals, and find humor in the little things they do. Children who favor the WWF,Yugio and Power Rangers will probably find the stories a bit tame, but my seven-year old son enjoyed the series of Olga books as much as I did when I was his age.

I have not read this yet. I have been wanting to read with my 6 year old son, but my 10 year old daughter won't give it up. She loves it and finds the stories fun and humorous.

This book is a charming story about a sassy, clever, adventurous guinea pig with a style all her own. Bond is imaginative, insightful and succintly well written. Olga is self possesed, somewhat mischievous and weaves a web of characters around her into a colorful tapestry of her own creation. I'm sure by the end you'll agree that her ventures end all too soon.
I read this book when I was a kid, and remembered its jolliness and simple hilarity. I know that today's modern whiz kids don't go in for that sappy stuff from the '70's, but you know, maybe a 1st or 2nd grader might tolerate it.

The premise is fairly simple--a little girl gets her father to purchase a guinea pig for her at the pet store, and the entire story is actually told through the eyes of this furry little creature, who somehow has the name of "Olga da Polga" !

It really is an endearing book, and people who enjoy simple yet engaging stories probably would get a kick out of it.

The original version is the best.
