Separated from her original owners at a highway rest stop on a trip to Maine, a kitten is chased by a dog, injured in a fall, and attacked by a herring gull. Exhausted, she is rescued by two innkeepers, who decide to take her home to Rockport. The cat adapts quickly to her new surroundings and to this day rules the roost at Strawberry Hill, greeting guests, walking them down to the water's edge, eyeing chickadees at the inn's bird feeder, and generally entertaining both her adopted parents and their guests.

Over the years in numerous visits to Strawberry Hill Seaside Inn my wife and I have been aware of Pumpkin the cat, but never did we 'connect' as we did during our recent stay of January 4-8, 2011. On two of the four nights we were the only guests there. Other guests perhaps were deterred by snowy winter conditions. Maybe it was out of loneliness that Pumpkin came to visit in our room on the top floor. Entering briskly, she promptly leaped up onto the bed wanting to play. Once the amusement wore off, Pumpkin jumped down from the bed, went over to the door, and stood there signaling that her visit with us was over. It was this personal encounter with Pumpkin that prompted us to purchase the book.

Most compelling in the reading is how Fran Hodgkins so completely enters into the mind of Pumpkin in ways that invite readers to do the same -- to experience Pumpkin's coping in the story line with feline senses of sight, touch and smell and thinking Pumpkin's thoughts. The water-colored illustrations further enhance reader appreciation. This may be a children's book, but, after personally experiencing Pumpkin in her world, this 75-year-old found it to be a delightfully transcendent read.

A perfect length… adorable illustrations.I would however stress to my grandchildren that cats should not be permitted outdoors. It is far too dangerous a place for our animals

My husband and I stayed at Strawberry Hill in Rockport, Maine, this summer and fell in love with the real Pumpkin, the Cat of Strawberry Hill. I just had to buy a copy of the book for my grand children. I am Library Director of Cape Porpoise Library in Maine, and I also purchased a copy for the children's section of the library. We have digital photos of pumpkin, and she looks exactly like the star of her book.
