Roots of Steel is nothing less than a chronicle of a great society unmoored, and Rudacille, at the heart of this reflection . Capturing workers’ experiences with a company emblematic of American steel’s decline, Rudacille work is a poignant contribution to American labor history.

Roots of Steel is nothing less than a chronicle of a great society unmoored, and Rudacille, at the heart of this reflection, aptly quotes the prescience of union stalwart John L. Lewis: ‘The future of labor is the future of America. God help us. -David Simon, creator of The Wire.

This fascinating book spans the early part of a century of contradictions: From being the firstborn child of a steel magnate in England's industrial north in the thirties, via this comfortable upbringing; to being a respected architect in London in the fifties and sixties and later fostering an architectural Renaissance with a family-based design and construction company in California. June Holroyd looks back on her life which she describes in intimate and amusing detail. Underneath there are unsaid allusions to the incestuous and yet ultimately fulfilling relationship between America and England, the mother country and her strong son who has grown to become the most powerful nation in the world, through the war years and the cold war up to the present day. June Holroyd is a tough woman, as her 'roots of steel' might indicate, some would say she was a feminist in her time, an early example of a successful self-made woman long before the business executives of the eighties and nineties, and yet there is affection here also. You will have to read this highly entertaining book and find out for yourself!

I found this story of a pioneering woman architect fascinating, a good read. Her story of life in England during WWII is engrossing, and made even better by the inclusion of letters which the author wrote to her parents during that time. In fact, letters throughout the book add to the feeling of really being there. Thank goodness for people who take the time to write long letters, and for those who store them away for a later generation! The author projects a feisty temperament which, along with her obvious talent, must have been a big help in opening career doors and achieving such a fulfilling life. Her observations of the relationships between England and the US are thought-provoking. I greatly enjoyed this book.

I enjoyed June's autobiography as it brought the events, customs, and flavor of the 1940's and 1950's back to life. As the sources for the book were extremely descriptive letters, most written to June's mother, the text is very animated and transports the reader back in time where they relive that time period right along side June and her husband Geoffrey while they ply their emerging careers as young architects newly arrived in Boston from England. Another interesting feature of this book is the vast picture gallery depicting individuals referred to in the text.

This book was recommended by a British gal in our club. Sentence structure was poor. Content was not believable. If this author loves England so much why did she come to US? It looks like she only worked two years! And what was her job at Harvard? A secretary or cleaning lady. Definitely not a writer, save your money! This book is rubbish!
