His new book, The Shadows of the American Century, joins the essential short list of scrupulous historical and comparative studies of the United States as an awesome, conflicted, technologically innovative, routinely atrocious, and ultimately hubristic imperial power. -John Dower, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Embracing Defeat, War Without Mercy, and The Violent American Century. I'm not much for hero worship, as most of us mere mortals have feet of clay, but Alfred McCoy has my total respect both for this current work and his earlier critically import work "The Politics of Heroin," which documented CIA complicity in narcotics trafficking.

Williams brings the tenseness of combat to life in this compelling read on the 11th Armored Cavalry (Blackhorse Regiment), which spent its tour in the jungle, crawling through dense undergrowth, plowing down 100 ft trees to make way for tanks, and engaging in eye to eye combat for lack of any open terrain in which to pursue their enemy. Rife with the horrors of war, the book is highlighted by the camaraderie forged between soldiers who know each minute may be their last, as well as the bravery, courage, fear, success and failure, which ultimately must accompany war. When an aerial sweep by assisting F-4 Phantom fighter jets results in American soldiers instinctively ducking, one gets a sense of what these men were exposed to daily in a conflagration which employed grenade launchers, flamethrowers, rockets, missiles and mines. Not being knowledgeable about the Vietnam war, I appreciate the authors candor, pro and con analysis of weaponry, and well placed humor. Five star read and a must-have addition to any library. JSJ

Great book and I have only one complaint. I wish the author had done a better job in researching the M-16. He is absolutely correct about the problems with that rifle when it was first used in Vietnam. But he's wrong when he says they still haven't been corrected at the time he wrote his book. In reality, they were corrected shortly after there introduction. The fact is, there never was really much wrong with the gun itself. The problem was, largely, with McNamara and his desire to cut costs. A cheaper form of gunpowder, not what Stoner intended, was used. On top of that, someone, not Stoner, came up with the idea that the gun was self cleaning and no cleaning kit's were issued. Williams refers to this in his book. Stoner was appalled when he found out about these asinine decisions. Once these were taken care of, along with adding chrome lined barrels and a forward assist, the M-16 was very reliable. Today, the only people who use the AK-47, are those who can't afford an M-16.
This book was of special interest to me since I served as an ARmy nurse at the Twelfth EVac hospital at CU Chi prior to the author,s service. Although I have a better understanding than many Americans of the sacrifices made by our military, Mr. Williams has presented a vivid, and I believe, accurate account of his experiences in Viet Nam. He writes with a descriptive style that makes this book an interesting read. We owe so much to these brave men .
I read a LOT of these. Some are great stories told with bad framer and writing, most are god personal stories, this is not only a great story, but very well crafted as all. Well done sir. Thanks for your service. USN Vietnamese 73 and 74

I really enjoyed this book. It's like the author is sitting in your family room telling his stories. One problem i had was his use of "before long". It seems like he starts at least one paragraph every other page with this phrase. I would fault the editor for this. But the memoir is a good one and I've read over 100 books on Vietnam. Great job Lonnie!
I was there with Lonnie, i know first hand what took place in all events.... well done my brother : larry cunningham
