Great Read. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 14 years ago. A great read. Gritty and down to earth story of a WWII bomber pilot and his Marine wife.

Audrey was a Marine and Allen was in the Army Air Corp when they married at the beginning of World War II. While most of the book is about Allen’s service, the letters between the two highlights his wife’s service. The select biography supports his memories as a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot during the European campaign. He used photographs from his private collection and other within the public domain to show his colleagues, places, and missions. The book provides a look at the way two people fought war together emotionally but apart physically

I was fortunate to have been able to speak with and meet the author, Dr. (PhD.) Allen R. Ferguson. My brother was a US Army Air Forces (USAAF) Rated Aerial Gunner flying on the Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress heavy bomber. Dr. Ferguson, then a Lieutenant, was my brother's Airplane Commander in the war.

They flew with the 353d Bomb Squadron, 301st Bombardment Group (Heavy). This Group was an element of the 5th Wing of the 15th Air Force. They were based at Lucera, on the Italian mainland.

Not only did I meet the author, but I'm proud to say I was also a paid researcher for the book.

Dr. Ferguson held both a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and a Master of Arts Degree in Economics from Brown University BEFORE his enlistment as an Aviation Cadet in the USAAF. This made him "an old man" of age 24 in the Group. It gave him a unique perspective on the war, since he held two degrees from a prestigious "Ivy League" school. He knew he was participating in a great adventure, and he kept meticulous notes of his wartime experiences that were written while he was still overseas and involved in combat flying.

What I found most interesting in the book was information about USAAF pilot training. Information about the flight overseas and the story of the "Lone Wolf Mission" were very absorbing. I have read many aviation books about the war but none ever covered these topics.

There are two truly gripping segment of the book.

One covers a night training mission where the Ferguson crew nearly lost their lives because of a massive storm that covered most of the United States in the area of the country where they were flying.

The other concerns the mission on 6 November 1944, when the Ferguson crew, flying their "out of formation" bomber, found itself alone and was attacked by six German Me-109 fighters. They were rescued by two "red-tailed" P-51 Mustangs - the "Tuskegee Airmen." This was the all-black 332d Fighter Group commanded by the-then Colonel (later four-star General) Benjamin O. Davis, Jr.

We both decided to attend a meeting of the "Tuskegee Airmen Association" at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, DC. While there, Dr. Ferguson told the story of how his aircraft and crew were rescued by their Group. We both thanked them, telling them how grateful we were.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in flying or World War II military history.
