One of Canada's finest crime reporters tells the whole story of the Bernardo-Homolka case. The sensational trials of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka for abduction, rape, manslaughter and murder caused widespread controversy, as did the twelve-year sentence Homolka received as part of her deal with government lawyers. Yet, even though the publication ban on the case has been lifted, there is much the Canadian public still has not been told. Nick Pron now gives us a comprehensive account of previously banned information about Bernardo and Homolka's backgrounds and early relationship; of Homolka's role in the death of her sister, Tammy; of what turned Bernardo into a sadistic rapist and killer; of slip-shod police work and lack of communication that gave Bernardo and Homolka the opportunity to murder schoolgirls Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French; of the fifteen-month suppression of key videotape evidence; and a host of disturbing facts that were ruled inadmissable at the trial.Warning: This book contains graphic descriptions of violence. From the Paperback edition.

Yes, the story is gruesome. Yes, the story tells the horror that was experienced by the victims. Yes, it's a story of real life's darkest secrets. It also is a story that's well written and obviously well researched. The reader is warned as to the descriptive content. Also. The reader can simply leave the story at any time. I don't think the author could have a the story in any other way. To do so would have lessened the reality of the situation. The horror of the killings is what showed the motive of the killers and the sick personalities they possessed. Also, not to have told the story as it was done, may have left count as to the guilt that was so blatantly obvious after reading all the details. At least to some degree justice was served.

I agree with most of the other reviewers’ comments. But one thing strikes me about this case that I think is noteworthy. From the time she was a little girl, Homolka was dedicated to the fairytale dream of having a house where she could “live happily ever after” with a prince. We need to stop raising girls to believe that love and marriage conquer all and are worth any cost. It is unfair not only to women, but also to the men who are expected to live up to that image. No, that isn’t what caused these crimes. These people are sick and twisted, and Homolka probably did get off too easy. But even those who aren’t dangerous mental health cases suffer because we continue to teach the wrong ideas about marriage. Marriage is wonderful in many ways, but the idea that any marriage is better than no marriage leads people to enter into marriages they know are not a good idea and stay in abusive relationships far too long. Fairy tales are fine for little kids. But at some point, we all need to learn that we cannot see marriage as the solution to all of our problems. If Homolka had realized that, she might not have kept thinking Bernardo would change. Psychopaths seldom change because they seldom believe there is any reason to.

Descriptions of the terrible sexual abuse suffered by the victims in this case are not for the faint of heart. Any agency wanting to release or parole this animal would be well served to read this book. Karla on the other hand is out and free. One must make their own minds up as to the extent of her involvement. After reading the book I think she should, at the very least, be sitting in the cell next to Bernardo so they can relive and again enjoy every moment of the sadistic depravity they unleashed on their innocent victims. They should grow old together in a penitentiary far away from decent people who can only be sickened by these two primordial stains on decent societies toilet.

A little too graphic at times, but I can understand by putting in some of the sickening and horrific details, the reader can fully comprehend the level of depravity of these killers. My feelings from this book are, that while justice may have been served in this case, it should've been a far deeper justice than these two individuals received.
the monster
As horrific as this story is, it's telling is important. Pron gives the lurid and terrifying details of these crimes, and in so doing makes clear the malevolent natures of Bernardo and his wife, Karla. No one can read the section on the torture of Kristen French without feeling horror that Karla Homolka is free, and living as a middle class wife and mother. She deserves nothing less than life in prison with no frills and no comforts: Hard time without possibility of parole; this is in fact what she would have received had her crimes been committed here in the US.

A well written book, highly recommended.

The author has written an excellent account of all the facts in this case without malice or apologetics.
The sexual acts and murders committed by this couple were heinous in the extreme. The fact that Karla Holmolka would condone the rape etc. of her own younger sister, resulting in her death, is unconscionable.
The very fact that Karla did not receive the same sentence as her ex husband is mind boggling. I understand plea bargaining, but the plea deal Karla received was a huge miscarriage of justice.
And the fact that this woman walks the streets of Canada free, is an insult to the memory of all their victims! I am personally outraged and sickened.

Not for the faint of heart. They both committed unspeakable crimes in which Karla Homolka fully participated. They were all horrific but the absolute worst was allowing, aiding and abetting her sadistic pervert of a boyfriend to rape her own younger sister. AND got all the crimes on video tape! I kept wondering why she had no red flag signals, no gut feelings at all concerning Paul Bernadino who was and still incredibly bad news. A psychopath/sociopath behind a ' good looking face.' She testified against him and walked off into the sunset.
Totally unbelievable. Hard to believe that two people this crazy could have met up, lived an outward appearing life, later married, worked (at least she did) a regular job and nobody suspected a thing! I don't know whether their friends and families were naive or just plain stupid that they did not suspect a thing.
